We're delighted to announce we'll be screening Henry & Sunny at the very first Chaplin Film Festival scheduled to take place in Waterville, Co. Kerry from August 25th-28th.

It is the aim of the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival to quickly become an international fixture that will bring a smile to Kerry, Ireland and the World. Chaplin with his courage and pioneering spirit, brought laughter to millions of people through the medium of film, in very dark times. Our hope is that the film-makers of today will follow in Charlie’s illustrious footsteps by showcasing their comedy films at the festival!

Fergal Rock wins BlueCat Screenplay Contest with screenplay Calvin and Skye

Henry & Sunny writer/director Fergal Rock’s feature screenplay ‘Calvin & Skye’ won this year’s BlueCat International Fellini Screenwriting Award. One of 1600 submissions, Rock’s screenplay was named alongside four other winners.

This is the first time Fergal has entered an international screenwriting contest. BlueCat founder Gordy Hoffman congratulated Fergal on his win and praised his script which “demonstrated the creative writing excellence that BlueCat searches for in our competition”.

Founded in 1998 by screenwriter Gordy Hoffman, the aim of the BlueCat Screenwriting Competition is to develop and celebrate the undiscovered screenwriter. The competition provides written script analysis to every writer for every script entered. With the largest cash prize for a contest offering feedback, BlueCat finalists also receive extensive online promotion and the top scripts are suggested to the best of the industry. The competition is based in Hollywood, L.A.

Irreverent and poignant, Calvin & Skye charts the unlikely friendship between hypochondriac Calvin and terminally ill teenager, Skye.

Henry & Sunny to screen in Isle of Wight

Following on from our recent screening at the Boston Irish Film Festival, we're delighted to announce that Henry & Sunny will next screen at the Isle of Wight International Film Festival this April.

The screening takes place on Saturday, April 23.

The aim of the Ryde International Film Festival Isle of Wight is to encourage creativity in all aspects of film production, not dependant on financial and physical restrictions, gender, geographical location, age or ability.

September was a tremendous month for all involved with Henry & Sunny.

The short film, written and directed by Fergal Rock and produced by Orla Russell-Conway, screened six times on both sides of the Atlantic and Director of Photography Orla Russell-Conway won the Best Cinematography Award at the first ever Underground Cinema Awards.

The awards took place in Fitzpatrick Castle, Killiney on 18th September and were presented by Eamon Gilmore TD. This award caps a remarkable summer for the filmmakers following Henry & Sunny’s screening at Hollywood’s Feel Good Film Festival in August where the film was nominated for the Best Director (Fergal Rock) and Best Actress (Dorothy Cotter) Awards.

“It’s really rewarding to have all the hard work and good will that goes into making an independent short film acknowledged in this way”, said Russell-Conway. “It’s a testimony to all the talent that was involved in bringing this film to life. I am delighted and very honoured to receive this award, especially given the standard of filmmaking in this country.”

Henry & Sunny tells the bittersweet tale of Henry (Paulo Braganca), an unemployed clown, in love with a famous soap opera actress named Sunny Carmichael (Dorothy Cotter).

Rock and Russell-Conway’s next short, On Our Way, is in post-production and is due for a December release.

The Best Cinematography Award goes to...

Congratulations to Henry & Sunny cinematographer Orla Russell-Conway who won the Best Cinematography Award at the first ever Underground Cinema Awards on Saturday.

Orla not only shot the film but produced it as well and the award is very much deserved. We're delighted!

Congratulations also to Dave Byrne for organising a great night's entertainment. Dave screened over a hundred films at last year's Underground Cinema and has vowed to keep screening them as long as we keep making them!

Dave has been a great supporter of Henry & Sunny since the film screened at Underground Cinema last April and we thank him for everything he's done for Irish short films over the past year.

THE NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION

On Friday September 17, arts workers in every constituency around the country will meet their local TDs, including An Taoiseach Brian Cowen with his local Offaly-based artists and arts workers, to put the campaign demands before their public representatives, as well as raising additional local arts issues. NCFA members will also host a series of events around the country to further highlight, to the government and the general public, the important role the arts plays in the nation’s economic, social and civic recovery. There are a number of elements to the day, some of which are listed here below. Please be sure to get in touch with your Local Arts Workers Group to make sure you are a part of the action in your constituency.

Meeting Taoiseach Brian Cowen as part of the Campaign’s National Day of Action

Marcella Corcoran Kennedy, Chair of Birr Arts Centre, Rowena Keaveney, visual artist and arts therapy worker and 83 year old, John Beesley who is attending Clara Day Care Unit and is involved in many arts projects in the unit, are the National Campaign for the Arts workers who’ll be meeting with An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, at the county council building in Tullamore at 12:30pm to discuss with him both local issues and the key demands of the NCFA. In the run-up to the 2011 budget the National Campaign for the Arts is calling for the maintenance of existing levels of arts funding to all agencies for the arts including The Arts Council, the Irish Film Board and Culture Ireland, the assurance that local authority arts funding will be protected and that significant new funding be made available to the arts and cultural sector, helping to build on its cultural tourism potential, through the creation of a dedicated cultural tourism fund.

Mary Hanafin TD, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport will participate in the National Day of Action by attending an event at the Pavilion Theatre entitled ‘Meet Our Artists: Generations Share’. This event, organized by the National Campaign for the Arts, is a public conversation with three leading artists living or working in the Dun Laoghaire area, interviewed by emerging youth performers and arts enthusiast.

SOME OF THE EVENTS HAPPENING AROUND THE COUNTRY INCLUDING:

Dublin: 1pm – The Irish Writers Centre & the Garden of Remembrance
Chairman of the Irish Writers’ Centre, Jack Harte, will walk from the IWC in Parnell Square, accompanied by a piper to lay a wreath at the Garden of Remembrance in honour and recognition of all the dead generations of writers who contributed to the creation of our state and the formation of our national identity. As part of this ceremony, Liam Mac Uistin will read his poem that is inscribed on the back wall of the Garden and that encapsulates the spirit of this commemorative shrine.All present will then return to the Writers’ Centre, where writers and members of the public will read short pieces from all the writers that are being commemorated.

Dublin South Central: 12:45pm – The Back Loft, Off Thomas Street, ‘The Thing Is’

A celebration of the arts which will include music, readings, short films and various other fun stuff.

The full line-up is as follows: - Ecosystem – a short film by Dublin South Central Arts Workers. Kevin Doherty performing from his latest album “Telegraph”; Eugene O’Brien reading from his award winning play “Eden”; Peter Sirr reading from his new collection of poetry “The Thing Is”; Grace Dyas of THEATREclub talks about her work; Music from Kevin Doherty and Marie Mulholland; Screening of award winning short film “Henry & Sunny”, shot in and around Thomas Street.

Dun Laoghaire: 5-6pm – The Pavilion Theatre, ‘Meet Our Artists: Generations Share’

North Tipperary: 8pm - Source Arts Centre, Open Stage

Local artists (professional or amateur) are invited to do a spot on the Source Arts Centre’s stage as part of a free event celebrating the arts.

South Tipperary: The Magical Moment Tree

Clonmel Junction Festival in conjunction with other cultural providers in South Tipperary will collaborate on building The Magical Moment Tree in The Common Thread Café. Starting on the NCFA Day of Action on 17 September and culminating on Culture Night on 24 September, the CJF team, with South Tipperary Artists Brigid Teehan and Lynn Mather will commence the building of the Magical Moment Tree. Members of the public of all ages and backgrounds are asked to come to The Common Thread and fill out a card and share a magical Arts moment with the community. On Culture Night, TDs, Senators and local representatives will be invited to come to the unveiling of the tree, to celebrate the importance of the arts in the community.

Henry & Sunny will screen at the Portobello Film Festival in London from September 13-15.

The Portobello Film Festival was created in 1996 as a reaction to the moribund state of the British film industry, to provide a forum for new film-makers and give exposure to movies on different formats. Many of their previously out-on-a-limb directors have since been recognised by the big fish in the industry. The festival has been dubbed ‘the wild side of Brit Film’ (Metro), ‘this pioneering film festival’ (Evening Standard), ‘the biggest celebration of independent film in Europe’ (The Independent) and ‘London’s biggest filmic free-for-all’ (Time Out).

We're delighted to announce our second US screening in as many months. Henry & Sunny will screen at Blissfest on September 19 in Colorado, USA.

Blissfest is all about community and the arts, working together in a positive environment to raise money for charitable organizations. It is a non-competitive, very exciting series of performances and films. The festival celebrates and supports Peace, Bliss, the arts, and charitable causes.

Meanwhile the Underground Cinema Short Film Festival takes place over two days in The Screen Cinema, D'Olier Street.

The first Underground Cinema Short Irish Film Festival will take place in the Screen Cinema on September 16th & 17th at 7.30pm nightly. Admission €10.

They will be screening 30 of the best short Irish films that Underground Cinema have screened since they first began our monthly screenings in September 2009.

Henry & Sunny screens on Thursday, September 16.

Henry & Sunny will also screen as part of The Underground Cinema Roadshow.

The next Roadshow screening is in Naas on Sunday, September, 26.

Hollywood Nominations for Henry & Sunny!

‘Henry & Sunny’ has been nominated for three awards at Hollywood’s Feel Good Film Festival!

In addition to Best Short, Fergal Rock has been nominated for Best Director while Dorothy Cotter has been nominated for Best Actress.

Fergal is the only short film director to receive a Best Director nomination and will compete against five feature film directors for the Award.

Dorothy has been nominated alongside Greta Gerwig (Greenberg) for Best Actress.

As you know our short film Henry & Sunny has been selected to screen at the Feel Good Film Festival in Hollywood California this August. We need your help to make the trip over in order to represent the film and Ireland at this prestigious event. The screening will be held in the famed Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, where the first Hollywood premiere was held in 1922.

We are hosting a Hollywood Fundraiser at the the Odessa Club on Sunday 25th July and hope you can be there.

'Henry & Sunny' to screen in Portugal!!!

‘Henry & Sunny’ has been officially selected for competition at Porto 7 – Festival Internacional de Curtas-metragens do Porto which takes place in Portugal from June 16th to 20th. Porto 7 promotes the production and exhibition of short films, music videos and cultural exchanges between different nationalities participating in artistic forms of expression. The festival is a non-profit event and all screenings are free.

This is particularly exciting for us as 'Henry & Sunny' star Paulo Braganca is a native of Portugal!

'Henry & Sunny' has been invited to participate in the Feel Good Short Film Competition held August 13th through August 15th, at Hollywood’s prestigious Egyptian Theatre!!! The festival showcases “films with happy endings, that make audiences laugh, and that capture the beauty of our world”. We're absolutely thrilled!

‘Henry & Sunny’ has also been selected for the Underground Cinema Roadshow which opens in Fermoy, Co. Cork on July 4th. Other films on the bill include No Justice, Of Best Intentions, Sugar Stick, Out of Tune, Lucky Escape, The End is Night, Over My Dead Body, Penny & The Man in the Boot. Underground Cinema is a monthly access program based in Dun Laoghaire which showcases some of the best short films in the country.

'Henry & Sunny' to screen at the Éigse Carlow Arts Festival!

Following on from our successful screening at the 'Corona' Fastnet Short Film Festival' last week 'Henry & Sunny' will next screen at the Eigse Carlow Arts Festival on Fri. 11th June, at 11.30pm..

The festival will display a vibrant programme of events spanning ten days and nights. Featuring a dynamic and diverse range of entertainment and arts, the 2010 Éigse festival will transform Carlow into the cultural hub of the South East.

'Henry & Sunny' will screen as part of the Éigse Film Shorts showcase which takes place in the impressive new Omniplex Digital Cinema in Carlow.

Our next Dublin screening will take place at Underground Cinema, in the Kingston Hotel, Dun Laoghaire on Friday, April 30th.

Underground Cinema is a monthly access program based in Dun Laoghaire. The program showcases on the big screen some of the best Short Irish Films in the country.

All short films submitted to Underground Cinema will be considered for the Underground Short Film Festival, September 2010.

The top 100 films will be short listed to 30 films. Awards will be given in recognition of film making, including acting, directing, writing, cinematography, editing and original music.

In addition, there will be two other awards, a special award selected by the audience and the Best Film Award

'Henry & Sunny' join the rebel clowns of Amsterdam....

Following our recent Amsterdam screening we received an exciting mail from the - wait for it! - Amsterdam Rebel Clowns . The Rebel Clowns enjoyed our film so much they've invited us to join forces and plan to showcase 'Henry & Sunny' at forthcoming 'infonights'. We are - as you can imagine - simply thrilled!

Rebelact, the Amsterdam battalion of the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army is looking for fools and rebels, radicals and rascals, tricksters and traitors, mutineers and malcontents to join its ranks.

You could be part of a fighting force armed with ruthless love and fully trained in the ancient art of clowning and non-violent direct action. You could learn ingeniously stupid tactics that baffle the powerful.

You don't need to like clowns or soldiers, you just need to love life and laughter as much as rebellion. If you think you've got what it takes then follow your future red nose & join Rebelact, the Amsterdam battalion of C.I.R.C.A.!

Like all armies, people who wish to join, have to undergo training. Before going into battle with Rebelact, recruits take part in intensive 'Bigshoe Camps' lasting approximately three days for the Basic Rebel Clown Training. At the end of the training you will be capable of taking on Rebel Clown Army mission. Becoming a clownbattant can be challenging, but it's a rewarding life.

Rebelact offers you a weekend training, that takes anybody and everybody on a journey to find their inner clown, release the spontaneous self, learning how to cooperate in a group, to do some very basic physical and narrative improvisation. International Film Festival Rotterdam...

Thanks to the wonderful efforts of a few kind hearted Henry & Sunny fans in Amsterdam we've been able to submit our film for the International Film Festival of Rotterdam.

In cooperation with NPS (a Dutch public broadcaster) the festival will show all submissions online. The editors will select three films every month from which a jury will choose the winner of that month.

After one year, the winners will be shown at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam in 2011 and the overall winner will receive the New Arrivals Award during the festival.

We are thrilled to announce 'Henry & Sunny' will screen in Amsterdam tomorrow night (Tuesday, March 23) as part of Articulation(s) - an international workshop run by the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis.

Articulation(s) - ASCA International Workshop 2010

How do we analyze, understand, and participate in the world? What are the ways in which we can think through concepts such as aesthetics, identity, politics, and space to articulate the object(s) of our inquiry?

These are a few of the questions the 2010 ASCA International Workshop, "Articulation(s)," seeks to explore. The workshop offers a space in which we can reflect upon such questions and the methodological nuances, theoretical consequences, and political implications that arise when we interrogate (trans)national theories, disciplines, and contested object(s).

With its double meaning, to express and to connect, articulation(s) highlights the contingency of the unities of meaning and of discourse(s) that we ascribe to our object(s) in question. Articulation(s) is a generative concept that has been prominent in shaping theory for decades. Working (inter)disciplinarily in the humanities, articulation(s), as a travelling concept, refers to the engaging of objects, concepts, and theories and the (im)possibilities of interrogation.

In this workshop articulation(s) is presented in relation to four distinct themes that we will (re)articulate and/or interrogate to see whether they help us express the relationships between theories, discipline, and object(s) from our various fields.

These issues will be discussed in four panels:

* Migratory Aesthetics
* Space
* Politics of Mourning

We had a great night at Bob Gallagher's New Volta Film Club on Tuesday night where 'Henry & Sunny' screened alongside an impressive selection of shorts.

Other filmmakers featured on the night included Paudie Baggott, Diarmaid Hanly, Sean Hunt, Paul Dodd, Seamus Hanly and Gerard Lough. Here's a glimpse at some of the films on display...

Henry & Sunny will screen at New Volta Film Club in Bewley's Cafe Theatre next Tuesday (March 9). The screening starts at 8.30 and admission is free. We hope you can make it!

New Volta Film Club is a monthly exhibition of new short film and animation in the heart of Dublin City. Screenings take place on the first Tuesday of every month in Bewley's Cafe Theatre on Grafton Street. The aim of the night is to provide filmmakers and animators with a place to meet, interact, and find an audience to show new work. We are very pleased to announce that "Henry & Sunny" will screen this Thursday (04/02/10) at ‘Culture and Abilities 2010’, an exhibition that uses a wide array of art forms to celebrate ability and diversity whilst also promoting the many creative talents of people who attend RehabCare’s resource centre in Portlaoise.

This free exhibition, which takes place in the magnificent setting of Roundwood House, Mountrath, is open to members of the public from Friday, 5th to Thursday, 11th February, 11am to 4pm daily.

The exhibition will be officially opened on Thursday, 4th February at a launch event managed by Paul John Brennan of Wolfhill Studios and attended by all involved in RehabCare Portlaoise, as well as a number of invited guests, among them Minister John Moloney TD, Senator David Norris, folk singer Paddy Reilly, and musician Sean Keane from The Chieftains.

Visitors to the ‘Culture and Abilities 2010’ exhibition are promised a multi-cultural journey as they follow the exhibition throughout Roundwood House exploring an array of art forms including music, visual art exhibitions and film.

Lighthouse screening and 'We the People's' Film Festival...

It has been a very busy few weeks for 'Henry & Sunny'.

On Friday, November 27th 'Henry & Sunny' was screened at the 'We the People's' Film Festival at London Metropolitan University (our UK debut!).

And the following day saw a packed house at the Lighthouse Cinema, Smithfield for our first Dublin screening. Thanks to everyone who came along. It was a truly memorable day.

Since then we've been busy applying to festivals all over the world and we hope 2010 will see 'Henry & Sunny' find an even bigger audience.

After a very successful screening at the Clones Film Festival, we are delighted to announce that 'Henry & Sunny' will next screen at the We The Peoples Film Festival in London.

This year's festival, which will be held at various London venues on 19 November 2009 and from 23-30 November 2009 will feature contributions from development agencies, UN agencies, international filmmakers, policy makers and think tanks. The We the Peoples 2009 Film Festival is an unmissable event for those working or interested in the work of the United Nations and international development, as well as the general public.

A classically trained pianist, Sam Jackson has been playing music for over twenty years. He frequently works with Tony Award winning director, Garry Hynes (Druid Theatre) and tours as keyboard player for Moya Brennan of Clannad. His critically acclaimed compositional work has featured in major productions around the world from Broadway to London, Tokyo and Ireland. As a performer, he has appeared on several albums and played across most of Europe, Canada and the USA.

His compositions feature classical, jazz, contemporary & traditional music, new technology and electronica. He regularly works with musicians from all disciplines and has produced critically acclaimed music for theatre, documentary, film and Performance Art. While studying in Dublin he was winner of the Walton memorial ensemble prize 2001 with Eilis Keogh, The Walton Memorial Scholarship that same year and the Roland Piano Prize 1999. He has received a FETAC in Music Technology and his work was part of the Irish National Exhibition for The Prague Quadrennial Exhibition of Sceneography 2007.

A dystopian film noir, Tom Waits Made Me Cry is the story of Vincent Martin Levine, a man crippled by apathy, in a Celebrity-governed society. Following his employer's murder at the hands of the Celebrity Government, Vincent begins his search for passion, a search that leads him through Star Wars via Tom Waits to his eventual destiny.

Orla Russell-Conway is the Producer and D.O.P. of Henry & Sunny.

Orla studied English literature & Geography for her Primary BA from UCD, graduating in 1998. She then went on to graduate with first class honours MA in Film (Theory & Production) from DIT in 2002.

With numerous film and television credits to her name, primarily in camera and cinematography, including Director of Photography on the multi-award winning short film “Full Circle”, she has a strong background in film production.

She has worked for both the Miller Dublin Film Festival and the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival for over 9 years, Orla has proven her skills not only in a filmmaking environment, but also in film exhibition and event management.

Orla founded and ran Dublin’s first ever regular short film screening series, Sunday Ghetto in 1999. In January 2006 she re-established Sunday Ghetto and ran a series of short-film screenings on a monthly basis throughout 2006, culminating in a high-profile grand final in December 2006, at which the Sunday Ghetto short film award for 2006 was adjudicated and awarded by a panel of filmmakers and industry professionals.

She has also recently worked with South Dublin County Council teaching filmmaking to several different community groups in Tallaght and South Dublin (2007 – 2009).

Orla’s talents as a gifted cinematographer and artist were recently recognized in her being awarded a substantial grant by the Arts & Disability Forum (an Arts Council of Ireland/Northern Ireland Arts Council joint-funded body), for the purchase of her own camera kit for the production of her own film projects. The first of these projects is Henry & Sunny made in collaboration with Writer/Director Fergal Rock.

Fergal graduated from University of Limerick in 1999 with a BA in English Literature and Media & Communication Studies. In his final year Fergal directed and edited the short documentary Animal Attraction and wrote his thesis on the independent filmmaker Hal Hartley as auteur. He also hosted a weekly music show on college radio station, Wired Fm. Fergal spent a year in Italy on the Erasmus programme where he studied English Literature and International Cinema at the Università degli Studi di Firenze.

Fergal continued his education at D.I.T. and graduated with an honours MA in Film (Theory & Production) in 2002. There he wrote and directed the short film Homeless Blues and worked on a number of other projects in a variety of roles including cinematographer, editor, and production designer. Fergal was both sound recordist and sound designer on the award winning Full Circle. His thesis examined the relationship between structure and narrative in the films of Nicolas Roeg.

Since graduating from D.I.T. Fergal has studied 'The Fundamentals of Story Analysis for Film' and 'The Fundamentals of Scene Analysis for Film' through Screen Training Ireland (FETAC & UCLA) and the 'Robert Towne Screenwriting Masterclass' through Screen Training Ireland and the Galway Film Centre.

In 2004 Fergal wrote and directed the RTE/Filmbase short film, “Tom Waits Made Me Cry”. The film screened at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, Kerry Film Festival, Mid-Ulster Film Festival, and was shown on RTE as part of the Shortscreen series.

Fergal was recently shortlisted for the Irish Film Board’s Virtual Cinema scheme. He is currently developing a number of screenplays for film and television.

His latest film, made in collaboration with Producer/DOP Orla Russell-Conway, is Henry & Sunny, the melancholic tale of an unemployed clown in love with a beautiful soap opera actress.

Henry & Sunny is a bittersweet love story about an unemployed clown called Henry who falls in love with a famous soap opera actress by the name of Sunny Carmichael. He writes her letters daily yet fear of rejection prevents him from disclosing his return address. Sunny reciprocates these feelings but is tragically unable to reach him. The film is set in a time of mass unemployment and recession where clowns have become the scapegoat for all of societies problems and so Henry's story becomes doubly tragic.

Henry & Sunny has become something of a labour of love. I wrote the script in 2002 whilst undertaking the MA in Film (Theory & Production) in D.I.T. and submitted it to numerous script award schemes over the years. The script was shortlisted for a Filmbase Award in 2005 but sadly didn't make the final three. In February last year my friend and colleague Orla Russell-Conway was awarded a disability grant from the Arts Council to fund her own camera kit under the provision that she make a short film. We decided to make Henry & Sunny.

We had no budget but we both loved the story and so we simply threw ourselves into it. Since then we've been lucky enough to work with a terrific bunch of people who feel just as strongly about the story as we do and so the Henry & Sunny family has grown to include Paulo Braganca, the Portuguese fado singer formerly signed to David Byrne's record label, Dorothy Cotter, an amazingly gifted actress and musician, the editor Nick Callan, composer Sam Jackson, and make-up artist Gemma Horan to name but a few. For a script that was written seven years ago the recession and the ensuing scramble to pin the blame on someone has left the film remarkably current. Indeed from the moment we decided to make this film the stars seem to have aligned themselves in our favour. We hope you enjoy watching it. We certainly enjoyed making it.
